Welcome to ISG's new Frequently Asked Questions. New questions and their respective answers will be added periodically, but if you can't find the solution to your particular problem here, and it's not covered in the [slightly longer] help files on the ISG support pages, please contact us.

Web Stuff

  • I get a permission denied error when trying to access a web page.

This could be due to a number of reasons (some beyond our control). If you know you should have legitimate access to the page (e.g. the web server they are on is not denying you access to them) then it could be our firewall. All HTTP traffic on ports other than 80, 8000, 8080, and HTTPS on ports other than 443 488 will be blocked for security reasons. If the site you are trying to access is on a different port this could be your problem.

You can still access the page using the Computer Center's Proxy as detailed on their page at: here.

Document formats

  • Some inconsiderate person sent me an MS Word file but I use linux.

If you're using a graphical desktop, you can try opening the document in OpenOffice (www.openoffice.org) or Abiword (www.abisource.com) (a much lower footprint, MS Word compatible editor, though recently i've found OpenOffice better rendered some word documents. YMMV). If you want to convert the document to a saner format, try Antiword (www.winfield.demon.nl/index.html). Antiword will convert to plain text, postscript, PDF, etc. For example, to generate a PDF out of a word document try:

antiword -a a4 word_file.doc > word_file.pdf
